My friend has one….he is a Houdini getting out of his crate…with time/age they tend to settle down. I watch him when they are out of town….a big baby really…loves nothing more than to curl up by the fireplace.

Many breeds of dogs need a lot of exercise. So I suggest you take the dog for long walks or runs. Provide plenty of food, water, and chew toys while you are away. If you keep the dog in a pen then provide food stuffed into small chew bones to keep the dog interested in chewing instead of being bored. Exercise is the answer to boredom.

Alone for 6-8 hours, meaning while you are away at work perhaps?
Active dogs above all else need exercise. The chewtoys and keeping the radio on, etc are all good in helpig while you’re gone. But if you can devote 40-60 of a strenuous workout/walk in the morning, that would be best. If you need to make the walks shorter, try one of those doggie backpacks. They’ll feel like they’re working harder, but during a shorter walk.

Vizslas are hunters/bird/gun dogs. They need plenty of daily exercise because they have such high energy. Before you leave the house and when you get home take the dog for a long walk or run. Take the dog to a dog park where he can run off-leash. Keep the dog stimulated physically and mentally with games and training. If you keep up the walking/jogging schedule your dog should not be as restless while you are away. While you are away try leaving a t.v. or radio on for noise and give him plenty of chew toys.

Besides running and retrieving working on basic and not so basic obedience will give them something to think about. Check out some of the exercises dogs are taught for obedience competition.
Another great mental exercise is to teach the dog names for its toys and family members. Use the names a lot – then start asking the dog where is the squeaky ball or whatever names you have used. This is another great mental project!
