The koi has barbules at each end of his mouth. They hang down and are used by the fish to search out food.
I’d also expect the koi to have brighter and clearer colours.

Koi are bigger and have catfish like antennea on their mouths.
Ask the former owner? duh.
Koi Carp are usually bigger and have these things on their mouth (feelers). Or take one to the pet shop.

Koi carp will have barbels sticking out below the sides of their mouth. No barbels mean you have goldfish
There are different types of Koi Fish. What I do recommend is either taking a picture of them or bring one in to your pet store, i.e. Petco or Petsmart and they will be able to determine. There are Koi fish that look exactly like Gold Fish. Some Koi Fish have coloring on top, Gold or Red or Orange and are white on the bottom.

Both types of fish ar Carp, a gold fish looks like a ………Goldish.
Put simply koi has more markings and barbles. And seem to grow bigger faster.
Not to answer your question as they are both basically of the carp family but I wouldn’t eat either one!

here is one main difference between them and their more elaborate cousins (the Koi) is that goldfish don’t have the tell tale barbells.
