Can i feed my koi as much as they want?

koi
jords-will-solve-it asked:

Hello there,
I have two koi in a 180l tank, 47 gallons and i have the tank in a warm room, they are always up for food even when they have had 10 pellets over a preriod of 30 mins, can i feed them every time they are up or is this just unhealthy? I am doing regular water changes to keep the amonia level down too.

Chz.

To be honest I think you’re going to have to restrict feeding else they’re simply going to outgrow that tank. Koi are eating machines and grow up to a metre long in ideal conditions, so you really have to try and slow down their growth as much as possible.

You CANNOT feed them as much as they want. Fish have no sense of what ‘full’ is, and you will kill them with over-feeding.

You should check with a pet store or veterinarian about how much to feed your fish, but if you give them more or too much you will kill them. That is the main reason fish die when younger children are in charge, they don’t realize that what they think is good is actually bad for the fish.

first off yes you can feed them all they want but it isn’t a good idea the rule about feeding is no more than what the can eat in about 3 mins you can feed them 2 to three times a day as long as they are eating the food and it isn’t just wasting on the bottom healty fish allways seam hungry even after just eating

the more you feed the more waste the more waste the more cleaning

dont feed them as much as you want, the rule for feeding is feed as much a fish can eat in 2 minutes if you go over this rule then you overfed them and might die of swimbladder problem and constipation

It is better feed your fish small amounts several times a day, than a large amount all at once. Some of the large amount of food will get wasted, and contribute to ammonia buildup. As your fish grow they need more food, so you should consider that as well. Bottom line: if all the food is being eaten when you feed, then you are NOT feeding too much.

The primary danger from over feeding is a sudden rise in ammonia caused by bacterial decay of the uneaten food. Use a bacterial additive (such as Cycle, or Stress Zyme) to convert ammonia from waste materials to nitrite and finally to nitrate. You will still need to do partial water changes to remove excess nitrate, but the bacterial additive will prevent sudden spikes of ammonia.

its not a good idea try and give as much as you think they should have

The two minute rule is good advice, twice daily.

They will beg for food regardless, so get yourself a routine and only feed at certain times.

They will outgrow your 180litres very quickly, so start looking for a suitable pond. They can both reach two feet in length and then you will have real trouble keeping the ammonia under control.
