we found two of our Koi dead in the pond this morning?

koi
MissEssex asked:

They didn’t have any diseases or anything, does anyone have any ideas why this may have happened? My young son was devastated when he found the first one dead this morning, and since then another has died, I am dreading telling him when he comes home from school :-(
the pond is about 8 foot x 5ft and the koi were only bought this year.

I’ve never raised Koi, but are the water specs okay? The ecosystem of the pond could be out of whack which could be picking them off one by one.

Do you know the age of the fish? It could be older than you may have thought and been a subject to the course of nature.

its the warm weather, it takes any oxygen out of the water especially during thunder storms. if you have a pond pump turn the fountain on full and something i use to do what worked is hang a hose pipe a few feet above the pond and turn it on , it doesn’t have to be on to much but it gives added oxygen as it hits the water. don’t worry about pond over flowing, its better than dead fish.

Your question is vague, how large was the kois and how big is your pond? How is the water quality and do you have a filter and pump running? Did it rain recently? Did someone put in some chemicals in by mistake? How are the other fish doing, do they look like they’re breathing above the water or lethargic? Did you check their gills and cut open their stomach to see if there might be been something underlying not visible on the exterior? Parasites and other things can affect the insides.

Fish dying like that could be something with the water either it’s poor quality, has chemicals that’s poisonous to it, or not enough oxygen. I would think water quality would be the issue so you might want to change some water with some fresh water to dillute whatever is in there.

    Hi,
It could be many things, herons are your main problem. Secondly is the water moving eg have you got a water pump, filter etc, if not then it could be a lack of oxygen. Third thing is has anything been put in to the pond chemicals, paint if you’ve painted a fence as this could poison the fish and so kill them if you think this has happened the best thing would be just to pump the water out and refill the pond.

But it could just be a natural deatrh and they could of died from old age as when you buy them you don’t know how old they are.

well herons would have eaten or at least injured them-most likely poor water quality. do you have a filter or fountain for the pond? and what size is the pond and how many fish are in it? get a test kit and check the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels first of all-I’m pretty sure you will find your answer there

A friend of mine has raised koi in her pond for several years.
Last year she purchased a couple new ones, placed them in the pond and next day they were dead. She replaced them to have the same thing happen. By now shwe was getting irritated and suspecting that the pet store was supplying her with diseased fish until she stepped into the pool to remove another 2 dead ones and zap! Luckily she was not injured but her pump had a short in it and it was electrifying her fish!
