When it becomes cold outside the water temperature of your pond will drop. The cooler temperature means that the fish will not be able to digest their food. It will rot in their stomachs.

You need to feed them a little bit at winter, but not as much as summer. You have to fead them a little or they will die very quick. Feed them a very little bit.

Hope this helps =]

I have kept koi carp for the last 10+ years. Depending how cold it gets where you live, they should be fed low-protein foods in the winter otherwise their stomachs will shut down. I would advise, though not to feed them a lot. This is not an aquarium fish and they will feed on fish smaller than itself if necessary. Once the water temperature gets below 10 degrees, their stomachs do not efficiently process food and the ammonia levels will skyrocket and/or you can have a nasty filter crash if you continue to feed them. Then, in the spring, don`t start feeding them until the water temp gets above 10 degrees. Start slowly to get their systems warmed up.

Koi are pond fish. If you are temporarily housing them in an aquarium, then continue feeding. The time to stop feeding Koi is dependent on the water temperature. Below 50F the fish stop eating, and feeding becomes polluting. Also if you have them in a pond don't be too quick to resume feeding in the Spring, wait until the water (at all levels) in the pond is above 50F.

I don't really know but I think they don't tend to eat in winter but you still feed them. Here is a website I found that you may find usefull.

Are they out in a pond or inside your home? If they are indoors you will need to feed them. If they are outdoors in a pond, you need to stop feeding them when the water temperature drops to 55 degrees and below. This is when they go into hibernation.
