it is probable a damaged scale that has become infected you need to get some formaldehyde treatment to add to the water, or the other fish will get infected.
i think that is a unique cool fish! I would leave the fish be as long as it is not distressed in any way.
There’s no cure for having one eye, but the fish should be fine with one eye as long as it live in an aquarium, not out in the open where predators could sneak up on its blind side.
The bulge in the other fish is probably some kind of tumor or cyst. There was an article last year in a fish magazine (I think it was in Tropical Fish Hobbyist) about surgery to remove an ovarian cyst in a koi. I suspect this koi may need surgery, too, so the Koi’s owner will need to find a veterinarian who treats fish.
Nice to see those fish in such a big tank:-)
The one eye thing is okay. Probably happened a long time ago. I had an african cichlid whose eye was eaten as a baby by bigger fish and he lived for a looong time. It probably caused him some pain when it happened, but now it’s done – it’s fine.
The bump looks like a tumor to me. I’ve tried to treat tumors in a few fish and I’ve never had any luck. They’ll last quite a while usually… often the tumor just grows and grows without effect until it gets so big that it starts to affect the swim bladder or another organ or body system. As far as I know though, there’s nothing that can be done for a tumor except to surgically remove it: it’s really tough to do, you need a vet who specializes in fish to do it, and often once they get in to the tumor they see that it has encased most of the organs and is inoperable. Tumors are common in some breeds of fish and Koi are one of them.
It’s so nice of you to care and ask questions about these fish. I love seeing class rooms with fish tanks the kids can learn so much about them.
I would enquire at the school, and if they do nothing about the situation I would contact PETA UK and the RSPCA.
The fish need veterinary attention.
no animal deserves to suffer, maybe the other fish are picking at it.
