Can you train a Vizsla?

Duckie Girl! asked:

I was wondering if you could train a Vizsla to be a guard dog… sounds a little freaky, I know, but I just was wondering. I already know they make great family and hunting dogs, but as to the guard factor… I’m not so sure.

    Hi there,

What these dogs excel at are alertness and attention to detail.

Our girl Vizsla always barks or notifies us whenever someone comes up towards the house or on our property. It is more of an “hey owner wake up someone is here” than a bark to warn the person. Once the person is acknowledged by us, she runs up to them and licks them. If we are on edge, she picks that up and says next to our side.

They are NON-Aggressive and I’d recommend not trying to change that.

Hope that helps. They are the best breed in the world, great human companions, who needs a dog that might bite or show aggression towards someone?

Any dog can be trained at any age. Contact your vet to find a puppy pre-school that will get you started. In my area, there are several provided by Petsmart, Petco, and the local community college. All are around $100. They teach basic discipline and commands for a well behaved and well socialized pet. There are advanced classes also available.

I think you need to ask my niece. She just recently went to visit my sister in San Diego and she came home speaking Russian. I think she could help you!!!

Some dogs are to sweet to be guard dogs. I tought my bulldogs to be on the watch. Everytime there was a sound that was suspisious I would ask my dogs in a what was that? over and over than they learned to pay attention to the sounds. When they saw that it bothered me then they payed attention.

I wouldn’t worry, almost all dogs will guard their territory. Even my Whippets will become rather ferocious if they think someone is outside our house. A Vizsla will too, you might be surprised.
