Puppy training classes are definitely NOT a waste of time. They serve two very important functions :

    1) Socialization – If you want to eventually own a loving, level-headed adult then you must do this stuff right. The puppy needs to experience a many different things as possible whilst it’s still young. Most “problem” dogs were not socialized when they were pups.

    2) Dog control – If all you achieve from classes is the ability to make your dog lie down at a distance then it will be worth every penny. The ability to make your dog stop dead just before it runs in front of a stream of traffic on a busy road is priceless.

Obedience. And all dogs need obedience for a happy life. If he isnt odedient, then you’ll be yellin at him and he wont be happy, And you can show off all the tricks he learns

We learnt a fair bit at Puppy training.

She learnt to sit, stay, and walk nicely on a lead.

More importantly, it gave our puppy a chance to socialise which she greatly enjoyed.

Up until about ten or fifteen years ago, there was no such thing as puppy training classes, except for the very exclusive owners. We got along just fine then, and yet people speak today as if they are indispensable. I feel they’re ok for socialization, but there’s nothing you can’t do on your own after reading a couple of books on training a puppy!

Basic obedience and socializing. Yes it helped me and my pup.

    it helped with a lot.
my dog learned the basic tricks and obedience commands
(sit, down, heel, wait, etc.), and also she learned fun side tricks (spin, crawl, shake, etc.).
it definitely wasn’t a waste of time,

It’s not a waste of time. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about training my dog until I took her to classes. Dogs do not outgrow or teach themselves anything. They have to be taught everything from how to come and how to behave. I think if everyone took obedience training , a lot of dogs would not be abandon by their owners for bad behaviour.

Puppy will learn to properly socialize with dogs and people.

YOU will learn how to teach your pup to mind basic commands, and a bit about canine behavior.

I think ever person new to dog ownership should go. Apply common sense as all trainers have different views. But it is something everyone can walk away from learning something new.

An owner who has learned how to train her better!

As long as you choose your puppy class with care, both you and your puppy should get a great deal out of it.

Your pup will learn to mix with other dogs and be confident and well behaved around strangers, both adults and children. You will learn how to handle your pup to best effect without resorting to yelling and grabbing at it. The puppy will learn to walk nicely on a loose lead, to come when called, to stay and to play with toys but also to give them up when you say so. All of these things are so much easier with a young puppy rather than waiting till the pup is older. If you wait until the pup is even 5 or 6 months old, chances are it will already have leaned some bad habits which you will then have to sort out.

Remember that your pup will be a part of your family for many years to come. Time and trouble taken now will pay off big time. If more people took their puppies to puppy class there would be far fewer dogs in rescue.

Don’t forget that you have an invaluable resource in the instructors. They will have years of experience with puppies of all breeds and temperaments and can answer any questions you may have such as feeding, toilet training and many other things that occur outside of class.

It’s not just what your puppy will get out of the classes but what you will get as well……You will receive expert advise on training and socialising your dog in a controlled environment and you will go back home to practise what you have learnt that week, that way you get knowledge in bite size amounts and both you and your pup won’t be overwhelmed with too much information, you can have confidence that it will work for you and your pup because it has worked countless times before with other owners and their dogs…

    Manners.
    Obedience.
    Socialisation.
You will meet other pup owners exchange tales realise that you may have an angel or a little devil.
    Advice from a trainer.
    It well worth it.

Provided the classes are well run your puppy will ge a lot out of it. 1st and formost it is a socialization experiance for him and socialization is your main aim with a young puppy even without the obediance aspect. He will meet other strange dogs and people in a friendly, non threatening environment (at first he may be too intimidated to join in but a good trainer will allow him the time and space he needs to adjust). A well socialized puppy generally grows into a well balanced dog.

Secondly you will learn how to train your dog in order for him to be a well behaved pet in the future.

If you have the time and the money, it is a good investment. Most classes have good instructors who can see what you are doing and help you a lot. Just reading a book or watching a video is good but if you are doing something wrong, you aren’t going to notice your own mistakes.

Classes get your puppy comfortable around other dogs and people. Makes it much easier later when you take the dog places.

Classes help you get started on the right foot with the basics. You still need to train your puppy at home later. House training, manners and barking control is taught at home over time.

Leash and basic obedience and commands are what you will learn how to do at most classes.
