What species of fish match what im looking for?

fishing match
Joanne asked:

Ok im thinking to getting rid of my smaller fish like the guppy and tetras (by getting rid i mean give them to my college) and getting either 1 medium biggish fish, and im looking for suggestions and preferably a photo as well.

It MUST be all of these:
Not Small 10cm+ average as an adult.
Nice or interesting to look at.
Not a Cichlid
Community Tank friendly
a top level swimmer (ive got plenty of bottom level swimmers)

My tank will have room for this fish once the small ones are gone and i know all about looking after them (ive done many animal care courses)
the fish im keeping are
2 plecks
2 ideian dwarf striped catfish
1 redfined shark
(they are all non aggressive)

Its a tropical freshwater tank

Its a good sized big propper tank, dont ask the size as i dont know where i put the paper with the measurments and i dont have a tape measure but my lectura says it plenty big enough for whats in there and that was when i had a few more smaller ones in there. (they have owned a petshop, worked in a zoo, written a gecko book and have kept and bred exotic and aquatics for years, so they know there stuff)

A gourami could be the fish you are looking for. The exact species will depend on your tank size. Some gouramis can get huge like the kissing gourami. Search gourami and see if any of them catch your eye and make sure it can fit in your tank if you go this route.

    What’s your tank size?
And what are the other fish in the tank that are staying in it?

Get some Gouramis, they are beautiful, and most do quite well in a community setting. But do your research first, there is lots of information on these beautiful fish out there, so happy hunting, and another thing, they are quite readily available at pet stores as well as online, so god luck :)

    Silver Dollars(Schooling fish)
    Gold Gourami

    Sailfin Mollies(need addition of salt)

Bala Shark, also know as silver shark.

But to be honest, you really need a minimum of 100 gallons as they are a shoaling fish meaning you will need more than one, and they do grow massive.

I think your best option here is the Pearl gourami or the Blue gourami, both are peaceable TL Swimmers and both grow more than large enough for you if given the space, ideally should be kept in pairs but singles will be OK, however I’m a little concerned that you don’t know how big your tank is, and both plecs and Red finned sharks can be somewhat aggressive to other fish if they feel they are pressured for space. One other thing to remember is that larger fish are often aggressive towards smaller tank mates regardless of species.
