Oh my, why do fish retailers insist on selling koi to new fishkeepers without ensuring that they know how to look after the fish ?

If the pond is brand new have you matured the filter ? (you do have a filter in the pond don’t you ?). Have you checked the water quality ?. Are you overfeeding the fish ?.

There are so many things that can kill newly introduced koi (the fish themselves might not have been in good health when you bought them). My advice would be to go to a reputable koi dealer and get some advice from them.

Koi are a wonderful fish but things have to be set up slowly and carefully until water quality is good enough for the fish to live happily.

    Good Luck !!

it sounds to me like they have been overfed. as fish only have small tummies, to much food will make the tummy rise to the surface. It happened with my fish. I would leave them for about 2 days without feeding them, the problem should rectify itself. Do keep a close eye on them though

They’re in shock. The swim bladder equilibrium problem (floating on their sides) is a symptom. Causes of the shock could be chemicals in the water or not properly acclimating them when you brought them home.

First, if the pond is just built, what materials was it built from, some plastics can leach chemicals into the water for several months. Get your plants started and introduce the fish next year.

Second where is the water coming from? If you have chlorinated water feeding into the pond you’ll need to fill it, then run the filtration pump at least 24 hours to resolve the issue. If it’s runoff there can be all kinds of chemicals from the road etc…

Third, when you bring the bag of fish home place them bag and all into the pond for 12 hours before releasing them.

    Hope that helps.

You need to start changing the water in the pond and try to discover if there is anything leaching chemicals into the system.

Take a sample of the water to a pet store and tell them EXACTLY what is going on… It might not hurt to take a fish with either…

Your fish are going to die if you don’t find the problem soon.

Go to the grocery store and buy as much cheap bottled water as you can and use buckets to scoop out as much water from the pond as humanly possible and replace at least HALF of the water with bottled water. Fill up clean buckets with tap water and allow them to sit out for at LEAST 24 hours for the chlorine to evaporate and then SLOWLY add that settled water to the pond.

Get stress coat and chemical nutrilizer from the pet store.

If you want to look at what options are avaylable before you go to your local store, try Doctor Foster and Smith animal product website and while you are there, request a catalogue be mailed to you.

They have almost every animal product on earth so you will get to research a VERY wide array of possible soulutions before heading to the pet store to get pro advice.

    Good luck!

Its something about the chemicals. i visited a fish store and bought 4 beautiful koi once my pond started running again and the man in the store told me to put the chamical in the water and wait 30 minutes so i did and i had to still keep them in their bag to get used to the water but anyways when i put them in they were going on their bellies so i took them all back dead and anoter man told me he was wrong and you are suppose to wait 4 days at the most! so i guess the chemical was too strong and burned the fish! :( they were sweet hearts tho!

IM having problems with my koi , when i built my two indoor holding tanks from blockwork i used a pvc pond liner ,but when i placed the liner in the ponds the corners were flapping a bit ,i was hopeing i will be ok ,every now and then ther is a fish floating ,so i drained one tank and pulled back the liner and there were rotten fish ,will this infect the other fish ,by the way i have done a massive water change and sealed all the corners ,the other week i added some anti parisite ,what else can i do .
