Dog Breeding And Neutering?

vizsla
* Bethany K * asked:

Hi,

I have a 6month old male Vizsla (Wire haired). I have had 3 other dogs, all males, but we have never bred from any of them. We hope that we will be able to give him one or two litters, but we are still unsure weather its the right thing to do.

If we decide to breed from him what age would be best? ( other advise will be appreciated too!)

We have only neutered our other dogs because they developed prostate cancer, and we do not wish this puppy to go through the same trauma. So, if we decided to neuter him what age would be the best to do so?

Thank you :)
By the way he comes from a very good bloodline and is a pedigree dog. (with certificate)
what i ment about the very good bloodlines was that not only are they good looking and physically sound, but that he comes from a healthy bloodline, with no inherrited defects. i will not be backyard breeding, i have been in touch with top kennel bitches and have had some intrest for the future, but we will not breed untill he is about 18months-2 years. But thanks for your comment

  • to breed from them they have to be at least 18months preferably about 2 yrs with all there health certificates etc

and to castrate them 6 months i think

  • 3 years is a good age to start breeding but to get the attention of a mate you need to get him to shows.

If you are going to castrate the sooner the better as soon as his testies have dropped.

  • Breeding should only be done by professionals. Dogs shouldn’t be bred until they have Penn-Hip, CERF, OFA, stuff like that tested. They also should have a showing or working title.

We really don’t need any more pet-quality dogs (we’ve got millions dieing already) so unless you want to spend the time and money on health testing and working, neuter your dogs.

4-6 months is a good time, but can be done later.

Edit: Just because your dog is registered does not mean he should be bred. All purebred dogs can be.

  • Your dog is way too young to breed. Is he of champion bloodline? Has he started getting involved with showing and conformation, or agility trials yet? You can fix your dog at this age. :)

Unless you plan on getting involved with the AKC shows community and finding a breeding mentor, as well as preparing some money for vet care and getting hooked up with a reputable vet, there is no way you can responsibly breed your animal. When he becomes of age (2 years), he should pass his OFA, CERF, and all those other fancy medical exams.

If you don’t show your dog and if he doesn’t pass tests, he isn’t fit to breed. He can live the rest of his life as a happy carefree pet.

  • None of us recommend Back Yard Breeding.

What is a Back Yard Breeder?

Neuter him for his own sake.

If you have completed all the necessary tests required before breeding he has completed his Championship in the show ring. Then you have a quality dog to breed. If you are not going that route the dog is not show worthy so there for is not breeding material.

The best way to decide this is to go to your local shelter or rescue and volunteer your time for 3 to 5 days. Only an hour or two a day. Then decide if you want to neuter or breed.

  • first off there is no such thing as a wire haired Vizsla….second off don’t breed your dog b/c backyard breeders or ppl that just want to breed thei dog are the cause to mant dogs being in shelters…neuter them all….dog must be 3 years old to breed, and bitches must have gone through two heat cycles, and then may be bred on there 3rd heat

With a foundation stock breed things can be a little (very) different.
Get together with the Breed Parent Club/s for the CORRECT answerers to your questions.

  • Having papers does not mean that your dog is breeding/show/working quality. All it means is that there are no other breeds in your Vizsla’s blood.

To determine if your dog is breeding quality, you need to have the appropriate genetic tests done. A reputable breeder has all of his/her dogs Penn-Hip, CERF, and OFA certified. They also will have earned working titles.

Even if your dog is from good bloodlines, you need to have the appropriate genetic certifications done. You cannot know if he is a carrier for a genetic defect without being certified. Things like CHD do not always show themselves for several generations. A veterinarian or veterinary specialist will do these genetic screenings for you. Your dog also needs to test negative for brucellosis before he is bred.

    Good luck!

  • Um, Rachel? There most certainly IS such a thing as the Wire-Haired Vizsla. Why slam someone when you can’t be bothered to research what they’re asking about? And though well-intentioned, some of us like the certainty of a genetically healthy dog, and so the shelter isn’t the place to go.

I commend you for having your head in the right place by wishing to breed responsibly. As TJ and Lizzy and others have stated, it is best ot go to the parent club and start there, and in the meantime to work and show your dog and get him fully vetted for genetic diseases.

Good luck to you! : )
