Should I continue feeding my freshwater Sturgeon/Sterlet through the winter?

koi carp
trev1690gers asked:

I live in the UK in my garden pond I have numerous fish, including Koi carp, Goldfish Grass carp, all of which I have stopped feeding.
I also have One rather large Sturgeon/Sterlet (approx. 15) Can anyone tell me if I should continue feeding him through the winter months? He still seems to be searching for food seems quite active, although not as much as in the summer months.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

It depends how cold the water is. Right now your pond is probally pretty cold, so you really shouldnt feed him. A lot of pond owners have that same trouble, but he will start to hibernate eventually.

No. you should never feed pond fish through winter. Fish go into a semi hibernation, if you feed them they will still take food but in the hibernation state their stomachs are asleep and they will rot from the inside out.

I have goldfish, Koi and a Sterlet in my pond. I was advised to continue feeding the sterlet, and that is what I do. Only a few sinking pellets twice a week. He seems ok and the other fish do not seem interested in the food. Hope this helps.
