Reading back on what I wrote I maybe give the impression that I am happy letting the dogs live outside full time but I am not. All I say if you have to leave them for a few hours they maybe happier out than in.

I have recently rehomed a Hungarian Vizsla (after 14 years of having a Weimaraner). She is magnificient and is quite happy and house trained to stay in the house for quite a few hours. I work part time 3 days a week.
Dependant on where you live in the world I wouldn’t want to keep her outside alone. If climate OK, the kennel has a good run and has another dog for company maybe. Must also be let out for good proper exercise every day. With what everybody has said I agree they need company but I also do think sometimes people over moddle coddle their dogs (myself included) and maybe we should remember they were bred for hunting/shooting and were never a lap dog. I think if my dog in the right climate, had company she may be happier being left in a kennel outside with a good run than inside.

If you both work full time it might be best to reconsider buying a dog. Dogs are social animals and can become stressed and destructive if left along for long periods of time.

I have kennels which I put my dogs into if I am out for more than 4 hours but I don’t work and most days am only gone for a few hours. There are 3 of them so have each other for company while I am out. .

Dogs were never meant to be home alone. They need love and companionship. If you are at work a full time job is about eight hours a day. There is also shopping and other things which will extend your dogs time home and alone.

Regardless of this, people make a living stealing dogs when they are left outside, they then contact the owners and demand a ransom, or sell them on. Do you want this hastle?

You will have seen your friends walking their well behaved dogs and enjoying their company. Believe me, dog who are left alone all day do not make good companions, they become unhappy and untrainable. Vizsla’s have a sort coat and regardless of the above they cannot be left outside in the cold. Get a cat and let it live indoors, or wait until you can make proper provisions for a dog.

No dog will thrive if let outside on its own. The Vizsla does not do well if it is not part of a family and with its short coat it would not be suitable to be left outside.

Why bother getting a dog if you’re just going to toss it outside and leave it there like a moving lawn ornament.

Sorry, but you don’t need a dog if you’re not going to treat it like family.

And it’s NOT suitable to live outside, it’s a very short haired dog, regardless of weather.

These dogs have short hair and little body fat – they need to be kept in the house.

Dogs are much happier if they live in the house with their people, and they are much better behaved, too.

my brother had that breed years ago and his was high strung as he was kept in a private room in the basement. when they got home he was starved for affection and they had a fenced in large yard but he was not happy. he was purchased for hunting mainly and i myself don’t think it’s fair to have a dog that is kept mostly confined. he needed more contact with the family and was totally happy and quiet when in the house.

This is a breed that does not do well as kennel dogs.
They prefer to be in the house with the owners and are not good banished to kennels.
They are very active and need lots of exercise and training as they become destructive and will bark excessively if left in kennels all the time.
If you do not have the time or want a dog in the house a dog would not be a great pet. Most breeds do not do wonderfully in kennels as if they are they never learn house manners.

No, it is not suitable. They have very short coats and are not supposed to be staying outside in the cold/hot all day. There’s a reason why they’re called DOMESTICATED animals. Dogs are cows/horses, etc.

Also, what is the point of having a dog if you are not going to bother training it or putting in the time? If you want the dog to be able to go outside during the day, then fence in your yard and install a doggy flap. Dogs take time, patience and money. It’s like having a baby. And if you’re not willing to put in all of those, extensively, then do the dog a favor and don’t take him home.
