Can white spirit fumes kill koi carp?

koi carp
Jules R asked:

Koi food was kept in it’s plastic bag and a substantial amount of white spirit had leaked on top of the sealed bag. Although it didn’t penetrate to the food it had a strong smell of white spirit. We poured the food into an open tub and left the lid off to give it some air, but now the koi are dying… would they have been poisoned or would this be unrelated?

  • Yes, they’ve been poisoned if they were fed that food.

White spirit is a common paint thinner made from hydrocarbons. It will not completely evaporate from food if the food has been contaminated with it.
