How long does it take for a Koi fish to become too big for a fish tank?

koi
dtsuldin asked:

I want to start a Koi aquarium, but I know koi’s get massive. I don’t have a pond and even if i made one idk if there is enough space in the yard for it. I know they live for like 30 years, maybe i would have moved somewhere bigger by then? So im wondering how long i can keep them in a fairly big aquarium before they get too big?

  • you koi will not get that big if its left in a small tank, so don’t worry. If you get them while they are young they will grow to a certaiin size to be able to accomadate in thier tank

  • dont waste your time if u dont have a pond

  • You should only get a Koi fish when ur abosolutely sure you have the space. They do need really big tanks, or ponds, and thinking that in 30 years time, you might move into a bigger house isn’t going to cut it! Once u move into that bigger house, i say, start as much Koi aquariums as u want!

    answer please:

  • It depends on the type of Koi Fish and what you feed them but generally they need to be moved to a bigger tank in a year to 2 years.

  • When properly cared for, koi will live much more than 30 years.

Fairly big aquarium? Thats not a 30 gallon. Thats a very small aquarium by koi standards. If you dont have an extremely large tank, or a pond of some sort, dont even get a koi.

  • Your koi won’t be able to grow large enough in a fish tank and will die an unfortunately early death. It needs sufficient room to grow to the body size it is intended to grow to Its unhealthy and cruel.

  • I have a pond in my backyard and the kois get pretty big. I remember when I bought a koi that was 3 inches long and 3 years later it’s about 18 inches long. They grow fast. Ive been having my fish for about 4 years.

  • pretty much birth…

how big is a fairly big aquarium..?

could be 2 weeks, could be 2 months, could be a year, depends how big the tank is

  • They grow too quickly to be kept in a fairly big tank. 1 Koi needs at least 1,000 gallons so if you don’t have a tank that big, they need a pond.

I would strongly suggest you consider another type of fish that doesn’t grow so large.

  • You could keep a Koi in a decent size tank (55gal) for maybe a year or so – then it’s going to NEED to go in a pond.

Rearing a Koi inside for a year is perfectly OK, gets them big enough to be safer in the pond, but 12-18 months is about all you have.

If you want something that looks like a Koi, get some Shubunkin goldfish. Several could live for life in a 70gal tank as long as you had good filtering and regular water changes.
