1) Water must be at least three feet deep or it may freeze solid.

2) There MUST be an open spot on the top to alow gas exchange, especially in smaller ponds, or if there are any debris. You can but a floating heater (expensive and unreliable) or make your own from a clamp light (search the web - plenty of plans.) I've been using the clamp light for several years. Ice has been as thick as 18 and the clamp light has kept a nice 10 wide hole open.

They can survive as long as the water doesn't freeze solid. If you are in a really cold area you can get a submersible heater that will keep and area of the pond ice free for them.

They can handle the cold just fine. Their metabolism slows to almost nothing and they won't require food if it's very cold. However, they can't survive if they are frozen solid! It's ok if there's ice on the pond as long as there's still water underneath for them.

If it gets really cold where you live, you could always buy a pond heater to keep it from freezing.
