Actually, we did not use the papers near the door approach, we just watched out puppys and when they looked like they were looking around, we opened the door and took them outside. Everytime after they ate a meal, or drank water, we also took them outside to “do their duty”. We stayed outside until they eliminated. The only mistakes we ever had were clearly our problem in not recognizing the puppy telling us that he had to go potty. The one thing you should watch out for is a puppy playing and having a good time and just forgetting that he has to go potty. You need to guess when he has had enough play and put him out. You DO need to tune into your puppy though.

I would probably set out paper for the dog to go to the bathroom on. Then, if the dog did its business on the paper, I would reward it. If it went to the bathroom off the paper, however, I would scold it. Then the dog would hopefully learn to go to the bathroom on the paper. From there, I would just move the paper nearer the door.

Keep it overnight, with water and some food, in a dog crate that you’re gonna have to get used to cleaning out and take it out in the garden regularly through the day, praise it for going outside, like make a real big fuss over how clever it is. But, and this is important, completely ignore it if it goes in the house, just clean it up and don’t even look at the puppy, this stops it using going in the house to get attention later on. If you do this right the dog will get used to either asking to go out when it needs to by going to the door or something or it’ll wait till you take it. I had a puppy house trained in three days using this method, he was a rescue dog so he’d had some attempts at training but one of the first things he did when i got him was go on the floor.

Well, the fairest thing on the dog would be for you to take him outside regularly, and certainly shortly after a meal or big drink: much as you would if you lived in a house rather than a flat. Putting paper near the door is an idea, but I’d be prepared to clear up several yellow puddles if you’re going to take that route!

You should look into crate training. I have two young dogs, and both of them were crate trained. I never did any of the newspaper or pee-pad stuff. That’s disgusting. The idea behind crate training is that if they are in a somewhat confined space, they won’t (or at least they’ll try their hardest!) not to eliminate in that space. Then once you get them out of the crate, you immediately take them outside where you want them to go.

More importantly though, if you’re considering getting a puppy, there’s a lot more to think about than just how to housebreak it. You should get a book on how to raise a puppy and read it before you get a dog. The book can teach you about crate training and everything else you’ll need to know.

tesco or a pet shop do training mats. they have a smell to them (we cant smell it) but they can and it teaches them to wee on it. start with that then take him out side as soon as u pick them up they stop anyway, so they will carry on outside its hard work and prepare for some little accidents. good luck

When i got my puppy she kept doing mess in the kitchen so my my dad put newspaper near the backdoor and she peed pooped on that. We used to put it near her bed and near the backdoor. Then my dad stopped putting it near the backdoor and left it open and she went out to do her buisness. After that we was fine but we still have to put newspaper near her bed for nightime for her.. Hope this helps!
