I have a 21 month old Viszla, a female, and she keeps rolling in other dogs dirt. Now I know it’s a hunting dog thing, but how do I stop it? She never seems to do it when she is out with m e, only when she is with my husband, yet I am the one who has to clean her up!! Any advice gratefully received!!
if shes on a leash or something then pull her with a little tug but a fierce one and if there is no leash then trying calling her name or scolding her
this is something i really think most dogs do ,it is a natural instinct to roll where another animal has been. i just correct mine when i see this happen .even my poodle which i had before did this one time just after i had paid 30 dollars for him to be groomed. a dog thing that they just do naturally. some things we just have to deal with if we are a pet lovers. like we humans they have hang ups that are undesirable but gotta love um anyway.
We do many walks with other Vizsla in the SF Bay Area and you are lucky it is dog dirt. About one in five love to roll in cow dung or dead animal carcases. It is a hunting thing where they are masking their own scent and it seems to be mostly the females that do it.

A strong LEAVE IT at the very beginning of the roll and if on leash a sharp tug. Use leave it quite often so the dog really gets that leave it means just that. She will get the idea

hehe my jack russell does that when she knows i not looking but as soon i as turn round, there she is with muck all over her with a face that says. now how did that get there.
they do it because in the wild, the pack leader, always smells the strongest, and has the most significant smell, so your dog (and mine alike) is trying to smell really strong so that they are in charge of us.
