Depends on the type of person you are. If this is going to bother you for the rest of your life for goodness sake own up and offer to replace the fish. If you are a bit of a joker get a similar fish and put it in his pond If you are a good liar and he mentions if just empathise with him. One thing I would ask you to ensure is that although he wasn’t in is to ensure that no other neighbours could have saw you and he could get to know anyway? Good luck!!!

I would buy one that looks just like the dead one, and replace it in the dead of night (just to add a bit of drama), then get rid of the dead one.
Or if you don’t want to buy one, just don’t mention it. I mean it was an accident and you obviously feel bad. He probably won’t notice, I wouldn’t notice if any of my fish went missing.

if you never made any other mess then put it back in the pond and deny all. those fish can be a bit expensive. What the eye dont see it can’t moan about x unless they are a really old couple that haven’t done you any harm then just explain what happened x

I agree with Jen on this. Proper etiquette says you let them know what happened, apologize and offer to buy them a new Japanese Koi. Retrieve the dead fish from the garbage and rinse it off before returning it to your neighbor.
Glad you only killed a fish and not yourself.

You should tell them what happened and offer to pay for it. I am an animal lover, so I feel bad for the fish. However, pets are considered property. You destroyed property, so you should offer to pay for the property you ruined. Don’t throw the fish away in case they want to bury the fish or something like that. (Again, they may be huge animal lovers.)

Also wanted to add that you should NOT try to replace the Koi behind their back. First, they’ll know a Koi is missing, and that the new Koi doesn’t belong. Second, fish need to be quarantined when they come from the pet store before being put in a tank/pond. If you put a new Koi in that has a parasite, it could end up killing all the fish in the pond.
