The simple answer is NO !!
The Vizsla is a sensitive soul, very loving, truly adorable BUT they need a lot of your attention. If you’d had a dog or two before then I’d say take a chance but I honestly believe that the combination of being a first dog together with young children would be a recipe for disaster.
As with any breed it is important to research before you buy. The Vizsla is a medium sized all purpose gundog, one of the HPR breeds (Hunt,Point,Retrieve) as such they needs lots of exercise and training to keep their mind occupied.
The best thing that you can do is log onto the Kennel Club website and find some breeders in your area who will be only too happy to answer any questions you may have about the breed and help you decide if it is the breed for you.
yes, their fun dogs
Hope This Helps!
As long as you can handle them
They can be quite energetic and boisterous
But yes i don’t see why not
They’re great dogs.
They can be stubborn, so keep in mind you may have to put your foot down with them.
Proper socialization and training is a must for any dog.
Please consider rescue/shelters before you head to a breeder.
They are a wonderful breed, but be aware that they are Very active dogs.
This is a hunting breed and it needs lots of very active exercise. They like to run and be out in fields and hunt things.
They are bred to go all day.
They can be slightly hyper if they do not get the exercise they need.
They take firm consistant training. And they may not take direction form a child all that well.
They are great dogs in the right home.
You should speak with a breeder or rescue who handles the breed and see if they think one will fit in to your liefstyle.
The idea home is a hunting home.
I agree that vizslas are great dogs, but I’d never recommend them to a first time dog owner, and especially not one with 3 young kids. No way!
Intelligent, large breed and extremely ACTIVE dogs are invariably the ones ending up dumped in shelters because people get in way over their heads. They haven’t got time to devote to the exercise or training the dog needs, the dog gets extremely bored and frustrated, that leads to them being destructive. The dog’s then deemed stupid, unruly, untrainable and dumped.
Check with shelters and rescues – too many dogs dumped and destroyed are large breeds.
I’d select a dog that’s not nearly as high energy, and doesn’t need as strong an owner/leader. If you like sporting dogs, perhaps a breed like a clumber spaniel, or even a gordon or english setter, might be a better choice.
My friend was interested in getting one, they have had Lab’s before but not had a dog in a long time. I spoke to a breeder who i train with and he said that as a first time not they aren’t rec ommended as they are a strong willed dog. He did say that you would have to do your homework and find a breeder who has a line which aren’t so hyper and are bred with a quieter temperament.
Have you considered a flat coated or golden retreiver instead? I think either of those would make a better first time dog, as you have young kids you may not have as much time to devote to training. Gundogs really are demanding.
These are super dogs but as a first dog in a home with 3 young children, perhaps not the best choice! These are very active dogs and need a fair bit of exercise, cannot help but wonder where, with 3 young children to care for, you would find the time needed.
Vizslas are great dogs, but they are not for everybody
Here is information on the breed that will help you decide whether or not this breed is right for you.
