Assuming that it is cold where you live, you would want to put the hiding places on the bottom of the pond, as this is where the fish will go to hibernate. You could use different sizes of terra cotta pots. Just lay them on their sides on the bottom.
i have a 5ft by 10ft pond for my baby koi and we put in a series of plants for them to hide in and plant baskets with moss over the top for them to hide in, we had terracotta pots in the pond but they cracked and had to be removed- our hiding places are mainly at the bottom but we have a ledge in our pond and so weve got baskets on the ledges too
