Yes it will be harder since she is a hunting breed, but it IS POSSIBLE. I have a Canary and 2 Whippet puppies and a Persian Cat. The key is to remember that it is YOUR bird and your puppy must respect you and your bird. I put puppy on a leash and slowly bring the pup closer to the caged bird. I practice sit and watch me and then let the pup look at the bird. Anytime the puppy stares too intently or goes stiff or acts like she wants to act up towards the bird I give a correction (intensity varies as needed). Mostly a sound Ahhh or Shhh or Leave It with a leash pop. I praise when the pup focuses on me. I do not let the bird loose around the pup till the puppy knows that the bird is not a toy. And I do not leave them unsupervised at all if the bird is loose. Teach the pup obedience and practice in the house and around the bird. You can even try clicker training bird and dog for a challenge LOL I have had Birds of Prey, Parrots, and other exotics around my dogs over the years. I am alpha, my dogs have to get along with whatever creatures I bring in the door. I've fostered dogs also, so even the new dogs have to obey my rules immediately. I use leashes in the house as needed. Crating the pup in the same room can give the bird roaming time while the pup feels safe. Screaming at a puppy when it tries to pounce a bird can make it more aggressive or fearful of the bird. Calm, consistent training...short, fun sessions are best. I reward calm behavior around my bird and my old cat. My current 12 mo. and 15 mo. Whippets live with a Canary and a 14 yr. old Persian cat in a tiny condo. They are very well behaved towards the other animals. They get lots of exercise and training. You can even teach your puppy a boundary around the cage that she's not allowed to cross if you want a puppy free zone a couple of feet around the cage. Dogs can learn all sorts of things if you break it down into steps and show them what you want. Instead of pulling dogs away from things all the time, I sometimes get in between the bird and the dog and back the dog up to where I expect it to be. I claim the bird in Cesar Millan's terms.
