okay, so what can I do?
My hungarian vizsla wont let clip her nails, she knows what the nail clippers are and tries to run away from them. When we go to take her feet she pulls away.
Her nails are starting to get too long now and they really really need clipping.
Any Ideas?
thanks
if we do it when she is asleep we can get two nails done before she realises what is happening and she runs off again

My dog is like that about the clippers, but she will let me grind them off with a cordless drimel with a sandpaper wheel on it.
If a dogs nails are ever cut too short, so that they bleed, the dog will usually be afraid everytime, but with grinding them off, the dog will let you know if you’re getting them too short.
Best of Luck!
My mums GSD is the same and she has had to take him to the vets to be sedated so he can have his nails clipped . He is that scared of the nail clippers that he would try to bite if you approached with them.
Filing instead of clipping. If she will not let you file as well, bring her to the groomer.
If she don’t go to the groomer, regular long walks is suppose to file down the nails a bit.
The vets do this, they knock the dog out with gas first, you shouldn’t do it yourself because you can cut too far down and it doesn’t stop bleeding for a long time.
With our dog we do make her lie down (not forcibly) and and we give her a treat after the nails have been clipped. First time this happened, we stopped her struggling, by holding her down (I know that sounds mean but it works), and afterwards we fed her a treat. From now on she lets us clip her nails, if she knows we are going to give her a treat afterwards, so we don’t have to force her down any more. By the way, don’t let your dog struggle to much if you do this the first time, as it can result in clipping the nail back to far and what happens next is what seji93 says.
Dogs whose humans rule them instead of the other way around allow all grooming. Take control or just have a groomer or vet do them. I have had impossible dogs that in a few weeks fall asleep while I Dremel their nails because I am Alpha.
I had this problem too. I would go to a groomer, and hold her, and they did it. She would bite too, she had to be muzzled. But it made it much easier to clip them.
you can just make an appointment at your vets for the veterinary nurse and she/he will cut them. if your dog struggles there will always be another nurse or vet there to help hold the dog. sedation for nail clipping is extreme!!
u can do quite a lot of things u can go to the vets and get it done there or u can do it y she is asleep but i think someone put tht x welll thankyou tht really got me thinking coz i didnt reallyy know x
Have them clipped at the vets 3 or 4 times and buy a pair of the same clippers the vets use.
Many dog owners are on edge when they cut, or try to cut, their dogs nails. Either they are worried about cutting too much off – particularly if the dog has black nails – or they are unsure about handling the clippers and spend so long fiddling around the dog gets restless or scared.
I cut both my dogs nails’ with little problem. I use the same clippers as are in use at my vets, these are what I would call the scissor/plier type clipper, NOT the guillitine type. The particular model has a little stainless steel shield/back plate behind one side which makes it quick and safe. The nail wont go past the back plate so you cannot cut too much off inadvertently. You cut perhaps 1/8th of an inch off at a time and I have never drawn blood yet with these. It is a case of little and often. If you let the claws grow too long it can be a long drawn out business to get them safely back to a short length.
I need help on what to do?
My dog snoopy will not let me cut his nails if he sees the clippers he will run away.I dont know what to do?He has never been to the vet in his life because he will bite them. What do i do?
our pitbull dozer absolutely would not let us cut his nails. he would bite, snarl, freakout unbelievably and was terrified. so i had my husband sit with dozer with a bunch of treats in his hand., enough to last a lil bit, and i while he was feeding him would pick up his one paw and start clipping. This works great. after sometime im sure he will get better. But hell its wayyyy better than sedation. and we were able to clip his nails.
