it's for leveling the tank.no you don't need it.but aways make sure the tank is as level as possible.and level- under the stand-kinda like shimming as opposed to the tank.when you buy a brand new tank do the directions say to use polystryene under the tank?no.just place the tank on a level surface that can hold the full tank.(unless you're gonna use it empty)the seams can leak over time if not level.it's rare that the glass will crack, unless a large rock topples over,or something hits it.

It's actually to stop the vibrations of your feet, the vacuum cleaner etc.

External vibrations in a fish tank is like your head in a bell. It shocks the fish and causes stress.

Old carpet, rubber matting, it all does the same thing, not necessarily polystyrene. You just want a shock mat.

Uncle is correct :o)

It avoids any pressure spots on the bottom of the tank. A tiny lump in the top of the stand, or a bit of grit etc would put pressure on the bottom of the tank, and could ***** it. Putting a thin layer of polystyrene under the tank spreads out the weight and hides any imperfections in the top of the tank stand.

Would you rather sleep on a bare wooden floor, or a foam matress?
