It shocks the fish and causes stress. Old carpet, rubber matting, it all does the same thing, not necessarily polystyrene. You just want a shock mat. A tiny lump in the top of the stand, or a bit of grit etc would put pressure on the bottom of the tank, and could ***** it. Putting a thin layer of polystyrene under the tank spreads out the weight and hides any imperfections in the top of the tank stand. Would you rather sleep on a bare wooden floor, or a foam matress?
