offshore fishing
It is the start of summer and you have loads of plans. Actually, there is only one thing you plan to do this summer, you just intend on doing lots of it: fishing. Every cell in your body seems to be yearning for the wide open sea, the salt spray, the excitement of the catch, and even the dull vibrations of the motorboat. Will this summer bring you the big one? Bring the Shimano Tyrnos with you and rest assured that you would get quality performance from this Shimano reel.

The Shimano Tyrnos is one of the latest conventional Shimano reels used for offshore fishing. Let me just make a few comparisons about its features with the other conventional Shimano reels on the market. It has the Aluminum frame the Shimano Tiagra is known for and the Graphite Sideplates that make the Shimano TLD light and nimble. These two combine to make the Shimano Tyrnos a durable, well-aligned, and light reel optimal for offshore fishing. Like the Shimano Tiagra, TLD, and Torsa, the Tyrnos has a lever drag to lessen or even completely do away with lever movement due to boat’s motor vibrations. The lever drag has a pre-programmable range which lets you set the Strike button to a specific pressure from an almost unlimited range. You can shift from Strike to Full and any pressure in between these two. The Shimano Tyrnos also has an ergonomic power handle similar to the ones found on the Tiagra, Trinidad, and Torsa for a comfortable, non-slip grip that provides increased torque. Common to all the conventional reels made by Shimano are the aluminum spool, anti-rust bearings, and the clicker.

This informative guide on the Shimano Tyrnos was sponsored by Sea Isle Tackle: http://www.seaisletackle.com – the Shimano Tyrnos is a great off-shore fishing reel – do you like offshore fishing? We at Sea Isle do, and we highly recommend this fishing reel. Not only can the Tyrnos be used for OFf-shore fishing, it can be used in freshwater, angling, deep sea, and much much more!

Several unique features distinguish the Shimano Tyrnos from the rest of the reels produced by Shimano. Unlike most other conventional Shimano reels which have a super stopper with assist stopper for anti-reverse, the Shimano Tyrnos has an alternating anti-reverse twin pawl which gives you hooksetting power for very little backplay. The reduced profile top crossbar found in Tyrnos models 20 and 30 give you tremendous line control when dropping lures or back baits when trolling. And oversized gears afford immense cranking power while an oversized handle shank gives increased torque.

The Shimano Tyrnos has 6 available models: TYR8, TYR10, TYR12, TYR16, TYR20, and TYR30. Line capacity, full and strike max drag, and model unit weight increase with the corresponding increase in model number. The Tyrnos also has a 2-Speed model which lets you shift easily form high to low gear by just pressing a button. With this innovation, you can have the cranking power of a reel in low gear and the speed needed in moving a lure or clearing a trolling pattern on a hook-up in high gear.

offshore fishing
Offshore fishing is the stuff of legend, and brings about daydreams of hours-long battles with huge sailfish ala Hemingway. To realize those dreams, one must first own the right equipment, including an offshore fishing boat. Offshore fishing boats are not your everyday boat. They are much heavier and more rugged than the average lake runabout you see in many of your neighbor’s driveways. In fact, you are highly unlikely to see any kind of offshore boat in anyone’s driveway as most are not trailerable, though some of the smaller ones are.

Safety is a primary consideration when purchasing an offshore saltwater fishing boat, as you can’t just take any boat out into the open ocean. These boats must be able to withstand some rolling ocean waves, and be able to protect the occupants in case of sudden inclement weather. I’m not saying that your boat should be able to plow through the perfect storm, but at least be able to get out of the rain and expect to come out alive should a few waves come along. Other safety concerns includes having bilge pumps, radio contact with the shore, and radar to detect oncoming vessels who may not detect you, especially if you should happen to be one of those crazies who likes to fish close to shipping lanes. Having an adequate supply of food and water is also a primary concern should you be forced to camp out for a while due to a conked out motor in the middle of inclement weather. It may take a while for the Coast Guard to come and get you!

In general terms, the bigger your offshore boat the better off you are. Of course, this is a moot point to those of us not rich enough to buy one of those huge cabin cruisers that we all dream about. Trade-offs may need to be made…Just make sure that you are aware of the risks and take them under consideration when purchasing your boat. As might be expected, offshore boats are the most expensive of all leisure boats due to the increased ruggedness and sheer size of them. Offshore boats range in size from about 26′ in length to just about any length you can imagine and you can expect to pay anywhere from $40,000 on up to a cool $500,000 for a good offshore boat. Anything more expensive than that is a yacht and is nothing more than a status symbol!

The smaller offshore boats will be equipped with either single or dual outboard motors. Most offshore motors will be of the high-horsepower variety, due to the need to power through rough waters. On larger boats, you can expect to have an inboard diesel motor of many hundreds of horses. The overall price of the boat, of course, is directly related to the amount of power that is packed into the motors.

This article gives a general overview of some of the items to consider when shopping for an offshore saltwater fishing boat. For more specific information, as well as suggestions on where to purchase a good fishing boat, be sure to visit Fishing Boat HQ

Fishing in Costa Rica- Where to Find the Fish

offshore fishing
With over 750 miles of coastline, anglers fishing in Costa Rica have a multitude of options. It’s a big ocean out there much of it void of fishing action. The key to successful offshore fishing is knowing where to find the fish.

There is no replacement for local expertise when it comes to finding fish. Every good captain knows where to find the fish, but you may find the following information helpful when exploring new fishing grounds.

The most important tip for finding fish is Watch for Variation. Variation can come in several forms, some obvious and some more subtle.

Los Corrientes

The tried and true method to finding billfish in Costa Rica is fishing in “los corrientes”. These currents can be spotted by a subtle change in color and in temperature. Baitfish and predators are plentiful in these currents. An experienced captain will work the edges of “los corrientes”. When fishing from Quepos, Jaco, or Herradura, captains will find “los corrientes” about twenty-five to thirty miles from shore during peak billfish season.

Oceanfloor Geography

Underwater geopgraphic structures such as canyons can increase the flow of ocean currents. The rapidly moving currents can trap bait fish and large game fish move in after the trapped bait. As with the seasonal currents, these currents may be spotted by looking for subtle changes in water color or surface temperature. Of course an experienced Costa Rican offshore fishing guide will have one eye on the bottom (GPS) and one eye on the surface looking for the subtle changes.

Floating Debris

The rainy season in Costa Rica is the hottest time of year for dorado, oftentimes bull dorado weighing over fifty pounds. The experienced fisherman knows that fish love structure, even temporary structure resulting from debris washing out to sea from rain swollen rivers. Fishing deep around weed lines, floating pallets, or logs can yield a great dorado run. Other game fish can be found beneath the debris as well.

Underwater Structure

Wrecks and reefs provide structure for large bottom fish including Cubera snapper and grouper. The structure is also home to plankton and other small organisms that attract baitfish which in turn attract big game fish looking for a meal. Remember that the main structure may be overfished while potential satellite sites around the structure are teaming with life. Larger gamefish often hang out at these quieter satellite sites.

Slicks

Keep you eye out for oily slicks on the waters surface. As big game fish such as dorado, tuna, marlin and sailfish are feeding they chase bait to the surface. Fish oils are released and the slick results. If you have found a bait slick you have found sometime of fish feeding. If you are lucky it will the trophy catch you are looking for.

Birds

Offshore birds are always fishing in Costa Rica. They are searching for bait pods, tuna feeding, or trolling billfish. Pay particular attention to the frigate birds especially those that are circling in one location. The experienced fishing guide knows that a lone frigate bird can lead you to a trophy Tuna, Marlin, or Sailfish.

When fishing offshore in Costa Rica, the importance of local expertise can not be overstated. Natural underwater geographic structures are consistent and local Costa Rica Fishing Guides have committed these to GPS and memory giving them the edge when fishing for big game fish in these waters. In addition, an experienced captain and mate will have developed keen eyes. I have seen Captains spot schooling Tuna 3 miles away, just by looking for disturbed water.

Fishing in the Florida Keys Islamorada

Fishing in the Florida Keys: Islamorada

At the southern most part of the United States, located between the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Florida Bay are the Florida Keys. Not only is this one of the most amazing places to vacation, with breathtaking scenery, sandy beaches, and crystal clear water; but there is an abundance of fish that inhabit the warm waters of the Florida Keys. Here, the enormous variety of fish species ranges from Kingfish to Permit. You can go off shore fishing for the big game such as Tuna and Marlin, but the Keys are also ideal for flat fishing on the Florida Bay for Bonefish or Tarpon. Each of the Keys is acknowledged for a special type of fish. Although the species of fish available may vary in different seasons, there is always something to catch year-round in the Keys.

Islamorada is one of the Upper Keys, and known as the sport fishing capital of the world. There have been more record-breaking fish caught here than anywhere in the world. Unlike anywhere else on the Atlantic Coast, the waters of the Gulf Stream are only a few miles offshore. These waters carry hundreds of different species of fish, as well as all warm water game fish that swims in the Northern hemisphere.

Fly fishing is becoming increasingly popular in Islamorada, catching many different types of fish. Some of the most popular fish caught on fly are Spotted Trout, Blue Marlin, Tarpon, and Bonefish.

You may choose to go offshore fishing in the breathtaking blue-green waters of Islamorada. Here you will find fish such as Sailfish, Dolphin, Marlin, Kingfish, Yellowtail, Wahoo, and Mutton Snapper.

If you fish in the beautiful backcountry bays, you will likely find Redfish, Snook, Sea Trout, Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, as well as many other fish. The waters here are calmer and shallower than that of the ocean. This allows for the use of flats and poling your boat.

Although you are likely to find most species of fish year round, there are certain seasons when specific fish are most abundant in the area.

Winter

Cobia, Grouper, Kingfish, Sailfish, Tuna, Shark

Spring

Blue Marlin, Dolphin, Snapper, Tarpon, Yellowtail, Wahoo

Summer

Tarpon, Dolphin, Yellowtail, Blue Marlin

Fall

Wahoo, Kingfish, Grouper, Bonefish, Snook

There are many fishing tournaments throughout the year in Islamorada. Some of these tournaments include; Captains take “the Cup”, Islamorada Swordfish Tournament, Islamorada Sailfish Tournament, Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge, George Bush Cheeca Lodge Bonefish Tournament, and Hog’s Breath King Mackerel Tournament.

There are hundreds of fishing charters, boat rentals, and guides located at the many marinas, to familiarize you with the best areas to fish. The different fishing charters include backcountry flats fishing, light tackle fishing, party boats, and offshore fishing. Because of the importance of local knowledge, it is best to choose fishing charter captains from locals who are familiar to fishing in the area.

The Challenge of Finding Top Fishing Charters

offshore fishing
Finding good fishing charters is usually a challenging and time consuming process. Most of the time you live in a different area than where your destination is and therefore, you don’t have good firsthand knowledge. Furthermore, you may know a friend or two that has used a fishing charter in the last year or two but what are the chances they booked a fishing trip in the exact place you are going? Wouldn’t it be helpful if you could contact a bunch of different people and get their opinions on the best fishing charters at your destination? For example, let’s say you are going to go fishing in Galveston for redfish and have never been before. How do you find Galveston fishing charters? What if you are traveling to Los Angeles on business and thought you’d take clients on an offshore fishing charter? Where would you start?

The internet has been a big help in making the process for searching for fishing charters easier. Specifically, the site FishingGuidesWorld.com has revolutionized the way word of mouth is used to locate fishing charters. On this site, users can write recommendations of their favorite guides for others to see. When booking a fishing charter, you can see which businesses have the best reputation in their area. Furthermore, you can see all the other vital information, such as pricing and location, that you need to plan your trip. The next time, say, you are planning an offshore fishing trip in Florida, go to FishingGuidesWorld.com. Here you will see which fishing charters fish for Marlin, Tuna, or Redfish, where they fish, and how the community of anglers ranks their business. This feedback will ensure that you are spending you money and vacation time wisely. You can quickly see which fishing charters have earned the best reputation and get connected to them immediately.

Chincoteague Virginia Offshore Fishing

offshore fishing
The waters off Chincoteague offer a variety of opportunities for offshore fishermen. Spring weather is usually very windy and boats don’t often get to fish outside the inlet in the early season. When a calm day presents itself, anglers can catch tautog or sea bass over local shipwrecks and artificial reefs.

By June, monster bluefish arrive and are often present in enormous numbers along the 20 fathom line. This fishing usually amounts to a 25-30 nautical mile trip from the inlet.

Days behind the bluefish are several species of sharks, the most sought after being the mako. Sandbar, tiger, thresher, blue, blacktip, bull, hammerhead and other sharks also begin to appear about this time. Local anglers attract sharks by chumming with ground fish, then using wire leaders baited with whatever bait can be attained. Fresh baits like bluefish, trout, mackerel, bonita, or false albacore are preferred.

By mid-June, tuna often appear off the coast. Bluefin tuna prefer cooler water and usually arrive first. In the early season, bluefin are caught among the vicious bluefish by trolling. By July, many anglers switch tactics and fish for tuna with cut butterfish. About the same time, yellowfin and dolphinfish begin to appear and many anglers troll for them as far out as Washington, Poorman’s and Norfolk Canyons. Some of these trips can exceed 70 nautical miles although good fishing is often just 25-30 nautical miles from home.

Late summer usually brings changes to offshore fishing. Better fishing is likely as tuna school up and develop a bigger appetite. Marlin, wahoo and large dolphinfish are also more likely. Another big factor is hurricane season. Some years we enjoy good late season weather and others we wait as systems work off the coast. Patient anglers usually get a few nice days and enjoy good offshore fishing into the fall.

By October, most ocean going anglers turn their attention back to sea bass, flounder and tautog. As the waters cool further, red drum and striped bass or “rockfish” migrate down the coast. By this time offshore fishing has ended and most anglers either retire, or begin fishing inshore for striped bass which goes on throughout the winter months.

offshore fishing
Saltwater fishing is entirely different from that of fresh water fishing, except that both are fishing. This is because of the area that any ocean fishing covers, ocean is vast with huge number of fishes in large-sizes. When you consider freshwater, only freshwater fishing gear, which is suitable for angling in the freshwater, is used. If you use the same freshwater fishing gear, it is inappropriate. This fresh water fishing gear will not be able to cover wide and deep distances, also they might be suitable for the fishes grown in freshwater pool, but it would not be suitable for those huge fishes in sea.

Saltwater Fishing Gear

To start your saltwater fishing one must upgrade the equipments initially. The first step would be to get a saltwater fishing gear. As we have already mentioned saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing differs in the size of the fishes and in the area of fishing. To cover a wide area and to get big saltwater fishes one has to enhance the fishing equipments. When you consider saltwater fishing gear, there are two main things that a sport angler should consider,

Saltwater fishing gear rod: Generally, rods might be smaller in length for freshwater fishing, but this saltwater fishing gear rod should be at least nine feet in length so that they reach good depth of the ocean.

Saltwater fishing reel: Next, we should consider a fishing reel that is specially designed for saltwater. Saltwater is generally corrosive, to withstand corrosion these reels must be built with special materials so that they stay well for long.

Coastal fishing might also involve offshore fishing, which means fishing miles away from the coastline. In that situation, one has to tackle the angling and then get successful with the offshore fishing. Fishing gear fishing would be successful most of the times of you are able to maintain the best angling.
